Why Learn to Dive
? ![]() Diving offers a fantastic opportunity to see the underwater world first hand to experience the feeling of awe, of meeting some of the most beautiful marine life. Perhaps you have watched some underwater programs on the television, being there is a whole new and exhilarating experience. The views are breathtaking, the feeling of being there can be indescribable. There are thousands of dive sites round the world, from ukdiving to the coral reefs in the Red Sea, Mediterranean islands like Malta, Greek islands, Cyprus, Turkey. Further afield like, Florida Keys, Californian kelp forests, Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, microindonesia islands, Yap, Truk lagoon, Sipidan the list goes on for ever. |
| We at Sea Urchin Divers will be pleased to introduce you to this wonderful world, hopefully dive with us over the years and come on some dive holidays we arrange each year. We have arranged escorted foreign dive trips to locations such as Malta and the Red Sea. | Once you can dive you will be
able to scuba from the shore and from suitable dive boats. Some destinations offer all
these, others tend to be boat diving only, others shore only. Come and have a go, with a Discover Scuba session in the pool. |

What Can I See ? The worlds marine life is extensive and varied depending on where you go scuba diving. Probably the most well known to the general public are the Coral reefs, these offer some of the most colourful scuba diving to be experienced- many reefs are like swimming in a tropical fish tank
|
Most of the reef diving is
relatively shallow waters, typically 3 to 15 metres, so you dont have to go deep to
get the bestBarracudas
|
| There is much more to see than coral reefs, there are lots of different underwater seascapes, just as there are lovely places to visit above land. For example in Tenerife the sea bed is very grand and impressive, created by volcanic action. There are very rugged rock formations to explore, drop offs, over hangs and crevices to see. | The Red Sea offers fantastic
coral reefs and all the brilliantly coloured fish that inhabit the reefs, these fish sleep
at night, but are replaced by the night shift, so diving at night time offers another
opportunity. It may seem frightening at first to dive at night, but you will be surprised at how much you can see, the sea world is illuminated by your torches and the experience is second to none. |
| Night diving is very popular
once you have gained your confidence after a period of day diving. Of course some divers
never go night diving, they prefer the day time scenery. All over the world ships have sailed and also met their plight. There are thousands of ship wrecks scattered world wide, many of them safe and shallow enough to be visited by qualified divers.
|
Wrecks are very popular for
various reasons, you can experience the feeling of seeing an impressive wreck under water,
it offers a special feeling to those who visit them. Marine life is nearly always in massive numbers on wrecks. The wreck offers habitats for a full range of life from sponges, corals, weeds and fish of all types. Wreck diving can offer a fantastic selection of visual opportunities not to be forgotten.
|
| Wrecks range from small craft perhaps 20 ft long to large ocean going ships 400 ft long. Some are upside down some are upright and intact (most impressive type), others are very broken up by wave and tide action, and resemble a pile of old rusty plates. All usually have a diversity of marine life resident there. Not all wrecks are ships, there are a number of Mulberry harbour units sunk off Bognor, these were man made floating docks used in the war and some of these are broken up on the sea bed. | Many marine creatures are
timid and should only be watched, however there are various dive locations where the fish
are happy to interact with divers and you can touch them. Octopus are fun to play with if
you can find some willing to be sociable, it must be kept in mind that we must conserve
our oceans and its life.
|
| What Can I Do ? There is some brilliant diving in the UK. Some areas are known to offer good diving and clear seas, Dorset, Devon and Cornwall are very good locations as are Scotland, Wales and Ireland. I regularly dive off the south coast around Brighton, Shoreham and Newhaven. The waters are not often that clear, but do offer an abundant marine life population, just waiting to be discovered. There are so many aspects and types of scuba diving, you will most certainly find a niche where you fit in. Some divers only scuba dive once a year whilst on holiday, others dive every weekend and travel extensively to do so. It's up to you! There are other activities related to scuba diving, for example there are various marine projects that require divers to participate.

The Marine Conservation
Society (MCS) regularly survey our coast and request help from volunteer divers to record
marine habitats, this data is used to assist planning for coastal developments and how it
may impact on marine life, also sites can be suggested for special conservation status. They Nautical Archaeological Society (NAS) perform on new and existing wrecks to learn more from our past, the most famous wreck surveyed is the Mary Rose from Portsmouth. This can be seen today in the special environmental chamber in Portsmouth dock yard, NAS offer training courses to recreation divers together with a development programme to gain recognised qualifications. There are a number of charity based marine survey agencies around the world where you can join a team of marine biologists, they offer training and you carry out coral reef surveys, you dont need to be a expert diver to join in, these activities are numerous, but to mention one, one is located in Belize. |
